Curriculum Overview:

Greenwood Leflore Consolidated School District’s CORE Curriculum Department believes that teachers are facilitators and coordinators; not just the dispensers of knowledge. The Core Curriculum team is a high-performing team that pursues excellence through shared goals, open communication, clear expectations, and a strong sense of accountability among their members. The team believes to have understanding, students must be able to state and apply the concept. Knowledge (mental structures and content) is varied by maturation, social interaction, and experience. We believe that ALL teachers are: intellectually competent, life-long learners, diversified, reflective thinkers, decision-makers, collaboratively sound, and professional educators.

GLCSD challenges all educators to be “Champions for Children!” pledging to "Move Each Student to the Next Level" by:

Analyzing multiple sources of data.
Using the data to guide instruction.
Providing quality, differentiated instruction to meet the needs of every learner.
Coaching teachers for effective teaching within a differentiated learning environment.
Developing professional learning communities to sustain learning.

3rd Grade Literacy Based Promotion Act

The Office of Elementary Education and Reading is responsible for supporting and training K-3rd grade teachers, curriculum specialists and other educators by providing research-based instructional strategies on literacy and guidance on the implementation of the Literacy-Based Promotion Act. Passed during the 2013 legislative session, the Literacy-Based Promotion Act (LBPA) places an emphasis on grade-level reading skills, particularly as students' progress through grades K-3. Beginning in the 2014-2015 school year, a student scoring at the lowest achievement level in reading on the established state-wide assessment for 3rd grade will not be promoted to 4th grade unless the student qualifies for a good cause exemption.

The LBPA was amended in 2016 and includes changes such as an Individual Reading Plan (IRP) and increased expectations for 3rd grade students beginning in 2018-2019.
